Good time to test your heating system and service your Boiler before Winter comes knocking

Good time to test your heating system and service your Boiler before Winter comes knocking

With the arrival of winter soon and long cool nights, homeowners are starting to turn on the central heating system.

However, in many cases the gas boiler system have not been completely turned off for several months and sudden ignition can cause problems.

This is the perfect time to check and resolve problems before the cold winter days comes and the central heating system is turned on every day.

It's a good idea to turn on your boiler system once or twice a month at least, even if you're not using it. This will help keep your boiler in good working condition. It also detects problems before using the heating system frequently and prevents dust and dirt buildup and pipe corrosion in your heating system.

If in doubt, call us at Abbey Boilers at any time to book a service or boiler check. This is an ideal time to properly maintain a central heating system before it is fully tested by the daily usage requirements of autumn and winter. Some of the simple things you can do to get the boiler and gas central heating system to work at the optimum level include ventilation of a radiator with a faucet.

If the radiator of the heating system has cold spots or is noisy, the air may be trapped and need bleeding.

If the radiator is cold, use a wrench to loosen the valve nut on one side of the radiator, wait for the air to swoosh and the water to begin to flow, then close it again.

This evenly distributes the water around the radiator and maintains the efficiency of the central heating system.

Once all the radiators are bled, the boiler should be turned on by raise the temperature slowly so that it does not heat too quickly until it reaches the ideal temperature.

The thermostat should be set to a comfortable temperature you require for your home, usually 18-21 degrees Celsius.

Taking care of your central heating system should help your boiler last longer, protect you from unnecessary repairs, so that you and your family can be in a nice warm home longer.

How would it feel to have your heating break down this winter?

How would it feel to have your heating break down this winter?

We have all felt the cold this week with the white snow parts of Kent and Sussex. As the weather is starting to get frosty, it is very important to take the time and prepare your home. That involves making sure your boiler is serviced and working in its peak condition, with minus temperatures we are facing your pipes can freeze and burst.

It is very important to check the pipes of your house. If they are not insulated, you are increasing the risk of letting them freeze or burst during cold temperatures like we are experiencing.

The boiler is even bigger issue than a frozen pipe. As it’s a safety issue and if it breaks down, you are risking yourself of having costly repairs and not having heating or hot water in the coldest days of the year.

Here is a simple guide to prevent such a scenario from Abbey Boilers:

Have your heating system and boiler serviced by a qualified engineer. Just in case you forgot to have your heating system or boiler checked this year, the best time to have it checked is when winter is still on its way. Having it serviced means our heating experts from Abbey Boilers can take a look at your equipment and check if it is working properly. If any defects or malfunctions are detected, we can repair it as soon as possible. It is better to find out minor problems and solve them as soon as possible rather than wait for the problems to get worse then have the issues fixed.

You don’t want any issues from your boiler and heating system in the dead of winter. Just imagine yourself not having heating or hot water in your home with the weather we have been having this week. Apart from the fact that putting up with heating problems during winter is very inconvenient, finding a heating engineer to attend to you might be difficult because they are extremely busy during cold periods like this with all the other lockdown issues we are all experiencing.

Smart Heating in your Home

Smart Heating in your Home

2020 has been an interesting year but when it comes to technology the future is here. With smart heating systems you control your heating via your smartphone or tablet from the comfort of your bed or office desk ay work, with the added benefit of cost saving on your bills.

The convenience of leaving your house and remembering you left your heating on full blast, and switching it off with touch of a button or driving home on a cold winter and getting your heating to your desired temperature.

Some are even more advanced and can help you set different temperatures for each room or have motion sensors so they detect if your home or not. Here at Abbey Boilers, we offer a range of intelligent heating systems that allow you to control your heating system.

Here are a few examples of system we have installed:

  • The Nest by google

With Energy UK finding that turning down your heating by one degree can cut your heating bills by 10% and save you around £85 a year, using your thermostat properly is pretty essential if you want to save money.

Even though programming a thermostat has been made simpler over the years, it’s still a task that many of us can do without. On top of entering every start and stop time you need throughout the week, you need to decide on the right temperature and plan for when you’re not going to be home.

This is where the Nest can help. This is a learning thermostat that, once installed, just needs to be set manually for a week – turn it on or off, or up or down, at certain times of the day and then it begins to program itself.

The artificial intelligence inside will learn your ideal timings and preferences, and start to apply them automatically.

No two homes are exactly the same, but the Nest will learn about your home when programming how quickly it heats and cools, and how it’s affected by outside weather conditions and adjust accordingly. It also turns itself down when you’re out by using sensors and your phone’s location.

This smart technology can save energy, and improve the efficiency of your home’s central heating and you’ll hardly need to do anything yourself.

If you already have the nest app for your smart door bell or CCTV it is the same app and hey all connect to each other.

  • The Wave by Worcester Bosch

A smart, Internet-connected control for your home’s central heating and hot water, the Wave has a corresponding app that allows you to monitor and control usage remotely via a phone or tablet connected to the internet.

  • InTouch by intergas

You can turn your phone into your thermostat by connecting your smartphone to your boiler, thanks to the InTouch app, which turns your house into a smart home.

By connecting your boiler to the internet, you can control your home’s heating from anywhere in the world via the InTouch app. The app also provides an easy-to-use, visual control system for those that struggle to program boiler panels, making it a simple way to monitor your heating.

But best of all, the InTouch app can boost the efficiency of your heating system. By staying connected with your boiler and monitoring usage, the app can respond to varying demand and use more or less energy as needed.

All heating services & Plumming work now available again.

Like all businesses, we at Abbey Boilers have had to make adjustments to the way we operate during lockdown period. Initially, that meant focusing entirely on emergency repairs as with he government guidelines. We then started boiler servicing, due to the important nature of this work, and throughout it all we have been operating within the guidelines set out by the government in terms of using PPE, hand sanitiser and social distancing.

This was all very necessary and our gas engineers, office staff and our customers welcomed it.

However, now that lockdown rules have started to relax and we know from the last three months that our working protocols are safe and embedded in how we operate, we are pleased to say that we are now almost back to business as usual out of Horsham West Sussex, and we could not be happier doing what we do best!

We are now offering our full range of services and no longer limiting it to just emergency repairs and boiler servicing.

Naturally, things aren’t exactly as they were before- all hygiene and social distancing rules remain in place and we do ask that you notify us if anyone in the household has any symptoms of covid19 or has done for the previous 14 days.

Now that we are able to resume plumbing and heating and home improvement work, you can call on us to sort out that dripping tap that’s been driving you mad, that temperamental toilet or even if you just fancy a new shower, Abbey Boilers is here for you like before.

Having worked throughout this crisis, we are confident that our covid19 working practices are safe for both customers and our gas engineers so you can book with confidence.

If you would like to book an appointment for any of our plumbing and heating services then you can email us on : admin@abbeyboilers.com. or call us on 01403 275512 during our office hours.

Our office staff are now back to work and we hope that we can get the economy of our country back on track.

Thank you for your continued patience during these challenging times.

Thermostats & Timers

At Abbey Boilers, here in Horsham, West Sussex - one of the key areas we see our customers having trouble is unreliable thermostats and timers. With a thermostat located in an awkward place, like an attic, cellar, next to a window or cooker, it can rec havoc with the temperature reading and cause your heating to come on at all sorts of odd times.

Malfunctioning or complicated digital boiler controllers/timers can also make things difficult - especially for older residents.

Pipe Insulation

The benefits of fitting out your house with pipe insulation are two-fold. As we all know, when water freezes, it expands. Now imagine the water in your household pipes freezing during a particularly cold snap in winter. A burst pipe and an ugly situation you don’t want to be dealing with. And you don’t have to. By adding pipe insulation to your boiler system you’ll ensure that the water in your pipes never dips below freezing temperatures.

The second benefit? Pipe insulation is also going to reduce your energy bills.

Ask one of our Abbey Boiler service professionals more about pipe insulation during your autumn service.

Power Flush your system
Want another money saving tip? Get a Power Flush during your boiler service.

A Power Flush is a professional level deep clean of your heating and water system. It’ll clean out all the built up sludge and grime in the pipes and radiators and replace it with clean water and a corrosion inhibitor.

This will vastly improve the efficiency of your central heating system - meaning you don’t need to have it on for such lengthy periods in order to heat your home sufficiently. Save money!

So if you’re in Horsham, West Sussex or the surrounding areas, call Abbey Boilers now and get your boiler serviced before the cold nights close in!
